I have read blogs from a lot of authors that are discouraged and deflated due to their poor book sales. As I recently responded to one author in particular, I really feel for them. It's hard enough to market and sell a book in any circumstance, but in today's economic mess it seems nearly impossible unless you're an established author with a huge name. However, there is one piece of advise that I have not seen many recommend but have found does help get your work sold. Try speaking with a charity that you like and do a book signing at one of their events. For example, I will be doing a book signing at a Hospice fund raiser in August. We advertise in advance that I--the author--will be there to personally autograph my books and that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charity. A lot of people are much more willing to purchase your book if they feel they are benefitting a good cause. While it is true you will only make a couple dollars per book this way, it's still a good feeling because you are getting your work out there and are helping a charity that you care about at the same time. Not to mention the fact that the more books you get out, the better chance you have at additional sales due to word of mouth. So get excited, find a worthy cause, and go sell some books.
