Troops at war and soldiers in prison 11/11/2009 6:37:22 AM
Does it make sense that more British veterans are in the prison system than on active service? At the moment, there are 9000 British troops in Afghanistan, and 20,000 British ex-servicemen in the UK's criminal justice system, with 8500 of them serving time behind bars. Of course, the government's penchant for warfare is contributing to full employment within the booming British arms industry, provides jobs for the police, supports the jail-building business, and keeps the judiciary busy.
So am I being small minded by suggesting that this is not a good thing? Perhaps it's just the old hippie in me that gets upset about such figures, including the statistic showing that more US servicemen commited suicide after their military deployment in VIetnam than were killed in action.
