And then there is the other side of me... Besides writing, I also have a part time job in IT, which is more part time now than it was a year ago, thanks to the economy. My company, which is a small business, made cuts in order to keep from losing money, in preparation for bad times. I think things are getting better, but can't be sure. The people 'upstairs' don't give any details. It hasn't been easy on my family to have lost that income, but we are getting by. We found a way to tighten up, and cut back. We did not give up the dream of getting my book published, though the timing of my loss of income was amazingly at the exact same time (same week) I was about to pull the proverbial trigger with Dog Ear Publishing.
So I do my best to keep myself valuable at the office, learning new skills as the company forges into new technologies to keep up with other companies so we don't lose business... and I hope to get my hours increased again so we can breathe a bit easier on the home front. It is a lot to juggle, mentally, but it is all worth it. I consider myself to be very lucky to still have the job and that my husband's job is still safe - at least for now (he works in healthcare) who knows what will happen with all of that.
I care a lot about what is going on in the country, because it is affecting everyone. I do not want to see this land of opportunity turn into less than that. I have been more in tuned and involved in the political world than I ever have been, and I am so proud of the people who are going out to Washington, going to tea parties, and all of those good things. Besides the urgency and frightening nature of it all, it is actually fascinating. Even my 11-year-old will sit with me and watch Glenn Beck, and ask really intelligent questions, too. :) We are living in very interesting, if not terrifying, times.
I don't have the time or money to go off on to protests, though I can almost imagine myself doing that... which is so NOT ME. I have managed to send letters and emails to my representatives, and will continue to do that. It isn't much, but at least it is something.
We all need to be heard. It makes me think of "Horton Hears a Who" - when everyone is yelling WE ARE HERE - but the big people can't hear them until every single last Who is making some noise - finally they find Jo-Jo - and he make his little sound... and all is well.
That's all for tonight. I need to go read to my daughter. We are reading the book "Hoot" together.
