Having trouble coming up with gift ideas for the kids in your life? How about books! I remember receiving books as gifts for Christmas back when I was in grade school. There is something so wonderful about a brand new shiny never-read book that is all yours. In the weeks following Christmas, on break from school, I would find a cozy spot in the house and read to my heart's content. I am so glad to find that my own daughter enjoys reading as much as I did and I plan on doing some book-shopping for her so she can curl up with a book over her break, just like I did.
While it goes without saying that I recommend my own books as gifts for kids between the grades of 1st and 5th - and beyond if they love animals! - I have other recommendations of books for gifts that I will share with you!
Some classics that I bought for my daughter in 3rd and 4th grade that we read together and really enjoyed include: The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brien. The Borrowers by Mary Norton. The Cricket in Times Square (Chester Cricket and His Friends) by George Selden. In 5th grade, we read the Stargirl books by Jerry Spinelli, Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, and everything by Sharon Creech. Now that she is in 6th grade, she is enjoying the Princess Diairies books by Meg Cabot, and read all of the Rick Riordan Percy Jackson books. We also really enjoyed all of the middle-grade books by Terry Pratchett, including the Tiffany series.
Besides the wonderful world of fiction, I like to give books that encourage kids to try new things. How about a cooking book? The Everything Kids' Cookbook: From mac ‘n cheese to double chocolate chip cookies - 90 recipes to have some finger-lickin’ fun by Sandra K Nissenberg Take a look!
How about something creative? Creative Crafts for Kids by Gill Dickenson. Or here's an idea for getting your child interested and involved in nature - teach him/her about birds and bird-watching! This is an especially wonderful idea if you are interested in birds yourself, or maybe Grandma or Grandpa is - what a nice way for a child to share experiences with a special adult in their life through a new hobby like this. Friends in the Meadow: Birds by Peggy H. Williams is a perfect book for getting young kids interested in birding. I shared it with my daughter and we both enjoyed it very much.
