Vanessa Smythe

Vanessa’s suspicions about Mason had been accurate as the boys talked about their father having no money. They had been a working class family with their mother working full time to support them. Mason had a bad back and wasn’t able to work so he had stayed at home to look after the boys. Gavin and William spoke sourly of their mother being diagnosed with cancer as if it was her fault. The money from the government that their father received, to take care of her, wasn’t enough and left them going without. They spoke as if they were glad that their mother was dead.
They couldn’t believe their luck as their father’s membership at the gym was coming to an end. This meant that he was going to have to go for another physical examination with the employer that he had worked with before he hurt his back. It had all been a compensation scam as Mason didn’t like working. The employer had paid for the gym as part of his recuperation and he was worried that he would have to resume work again. If Mason refused, he would lose his allowance, and would miss out on chatting up the women at the gym. The only thing that seemed to be in their favour was that an elderly woman that he had met had taken pity on him and offered his family the granny flat on her farm. An added bonus was that her sons didn’t use their motorbikes any longer and passed them on to the boys. Vanessa couldn’t believe that they could speak like that in the open without a care. Not liking what she had heard, she tried to think of some way to handle it but what could she do, as her mother couldn’t see past Mason’s false front.
‘Just think,’ Gavin said, ‘Dad can live with Lucinda and use all of her money for us to live on.’
Gasping for air at what she had just heard; Vanessa sat upright to think of a plan to expose the boys. The bed creaked as she moved which alerted the sharp ears of the boys. They were at her door but the desk was wedged behind it.
‘We know that you were listening,’ Gavin warned her through the crack in the doorway.
