As she turned to leave, the door opened, and a blonde-haired lady wearing a dress from the eighteenth century stood in front of her.
‘Are you Vanessa?’ she said. ‘We’ve been expecting you.’
Vanessa thought that she was going mad. The large-framed woman had to help her inside as Vanessa thought that she wouldn’t make it on her own. Her knees were about to give way as she fell down on the chair made of solid wood. As she looked at the strangers in the room, she burst into tears. The dark blue eyes of the lady warned the others to leave and a bowl of hot soup was placed on the table by the woman as she gestured for Vanessa to eat. As soon as the others had left, she began to speak.
Vanessa had a lot to tell her but more importantly she wanted the police to know about Jack’s body.
‘Don’t worry about Jack. He’s fine.’
Vanessa couldn’t believe what she was hearing. ‘How can he be fine? He’s dead.’
The lady took hold of her hands over the table and told her not to worry. ‘There is a lot to tell you but I don’t know if it will be too much for you to understand.’
‘It won’t,’ said Vanessa. ‘Please, tell me everything.’
‘My name is Emilia, I am a relative of Jack’s from years ago. When he died, he came here. A lady from your family tree named Aerona decides where spirits should go. Seeing that Jack had an uncontrollable urge to be with you, she sent him here to help you.’
‘So am I in the past now?’ she said sipping on her soup. ‘Did I die?’
‘No and no. This is the past but in a different realm. Not like the past from your realm that you’re familiar with. Normally you would have to die to come here but Aerona let you pass through the tree, which is a portal, while Jack is trying to sort out a way for you to be together.’
‘Wouldn’t it be better if I did die and then I could just live here with Jack?’
Feeling relaxed after eating the soup, she noticed that all her fears had disappeared. Emilia was a round woman who smiled at her in the same way a caring mother would. It had been a while since Vanessa had felt safe so she was quite happy to stay there for whatever length of time that she had to. Emilia’s hand felt warm as she led Vanessa to a bedroom. The room was small with pink furnishings. Vanessa giggled to herself thinking that a boy wouldn’t like this room if he had to stay over. There was something about the room that was inviting as she lay down on the bed to be tucked in by Emilia. As she drifted off to sleep, she could have sworn that she saw Emilia turn the lamp off with a movement from her hand.
The next morning, she woke to the fuzzy pink surroundings. She obviously could not be living in the past as the pink furniture would have not been thought of at that time. She felt like she was in a bedroom that belonged in a doll’s house. The bed was warm and comfortable as she listened to the people in the lounge room talking. Then she heard Jack’s voice. Jumping out of bed, she headed for the door. It wouldn’t open. Fear filled her as to why she would be locked in. Had she been drugged by Emilia? Irrational thoughts were now entering her head as she tried to think of a way to escape. She started to call out to Jack for help, but he didn’t come.
