Emilia put her arm around Vanessa and led her into the kitchen. She looked at the lock on the door and noticed that there wasn’t one there. Breaking free from Emilia’s hold she twisted the handle to see how it would lock, but it was just an ordinary round door knob.
‘How does this lock?’
‘Magic,’ smiled Emilia.
Vanessa looked confused.
‘I told you this is a different realm. There is magic here.’
‘So I can do magic then,’ Vanessa was thinking about things that she would like to do to her stepbrothers.
‘No, you can’t. You don’t belong here. Which reminds me, I have to take you to Aerona; she wants to meet you.’
Originally she had thought that the door was for a wardrobe but now she knew it could be anything. At that moment, all Vanessa knew was that she wanted a bathroom. Opening the door, a toilet appeared. She would have loved to have had a shower but there wasn’t anything else there; not even a wash basin. Walking back out of the door and into the bedroom she wondered, if she thought about something else while she opened the door, if that would appear. A mirror showed her dirty clothes so she thought about how she would like to look clean. Opening the door slowly she hoped that a shower would appear but it turned into a wardrobe of clothes for her. Stepping inside she picked out a pair of jeans and a jumper. As she took her clothes off, she noticed that her fingernails looked cleaner. Her clothes disappeared into the floor as she dropped them. Putting on the new clothes she suddenly felt clean. As soon as she was dressed she closed the door and looked in the mirror. Twice, she looked into the mirror, as she was stunned to see that she was spotless. Her hair was shining as it bounced full of life down to her waist. She looked at her teeth that gleamed white against her perfect complexion. Looking at herself in the flesh she wondered if the mirror was magic or it just let you look at what you wanted to see. She would have to go outside and see what reaction she would get from Emilia to find out for sure.
At the stable she took off the saddle and bridle. The horse’s black coat shone and his blue eyes sparkled. She felt scared as the horse moved his head over to her shoulder but was soon relieved as he nuzzled into her ear. She could have sworn that he was trying to talk to her. Then he was rubbing his head into her chest pushing her back against the wall. Feeling as if she was about to fall she threw her arms out to balance herself. In an instant, the horse’s mane was in her hands and her arms were around his neck. His head was back at her shoulder again as if he wanted to be cuddled. Playing with his mane while his mouth moved against her neck gave her a sense of security. She didn’t know whether to go or not as the horse seemed to be enjoying the attention.
The forest beckoned her as she made her way down the driveway. It was hard for Vanessa to comprehend that the dirt under her feet had been a concrete driveway only a short time ago. In her head, she wanted to walk to the road and look at the street but her heart pulled her to the woods. Her life had been filled with material objects and socialising. School work and looking good had been her priority, at least while her father was alive. She thought that she had been happy then but now, as she walked amongst the trees, she knew that there was a different type of happiness that she could feel. Jack had made her happy on the inside, deep within her soul. The forest had brought her to Jack and for that she was eternally grateful.
