Vanessa lay on the ground rubbing her head as she came to. She tried to recall what had just happened. The boys were throwing rocks at her and one had hit her on the head. Then she remembered falling, but she felt like she had fallen inside the tree trunk. As she lay on the ground, looking up at the golden leaves swaying in the breeze, she knew that she had fallen to the ground.
Suddenly she jumped up in fear wondering where the boys were. Trying to hide behind the trunk of the tree, she peered around to see where they were but they were nowhere to be seen. Then she remembered Jack’s body in the ground. Looking around she noticed that there weren’t any branches covering the ground. How long had she been knocked out? The boys must have filled in the hole with dirt. She couldn’t understand why they had left her there and not put her in the hole as well. It was the perfect opportunity for them to kill her so, why hadn’t they? She was trying to remember where the hole was. Quickly she kicked around at the dirt as she knew that they would probably be coming back soon to finish her off now that the hole was filled.
Then the sound of thunder was upon her. Terrified she jumped behind a tree thinking that her stepbrothers were coming after her on their motorbikes. As she listened, she was sure that it wasn’t the sound of a motor. It was thunderous but not mechanical. Peeking to take a look, she found a rippling black horse galloping towards her. Quickly she turned her body back behind the tree to watch the back of the horse disappear into the forest across the field.
Standing for a while she tried to think of anyone that had a horse. She had never noticed one in the forest before. The rider had been unrecognisable as a dark bronze cloak covered most of the face. Only the auburn wavy hair bouncing in the wind, caused by the speed of the horse, gave the impression that the rider was a female. Heading in the same direction, she wondered if she would see her again. Once everything was quiet again Vanessa proceeded forward to cross the field. The moon was full as it made its way up in the sky. She stood looking at it in awe. Never had it looked so big. It was as if she could walk up to it and touch it. She felt drawn to it, but had to stop herself, as there was a need for her to keep moving.
Hiding in the trees, she thought that this time she might get to see who the rider was, but the sound was too loud and was coming from somewhere in the distance. Moving to a position where she couldn’t be seen, she watched a herd of horses galloping towards the moon. Bewildered, as she had never seen or heard anything like that before, Vanessa wondered if she was dreaming. The moon, now glowing with light, seemed to be calling the horses. As if in a trance, they galloped straight for it. The light was blinding now and she had to cover her eyes as the animals disappeared. Maybe she was still unconscious; it was a possibility but she kept going. Finally she could see the house in the distance.
As she walked closer to what should be the Turner’s home, she noticed that it looked different. Light was flickering through the windows of the stone cottage. What used to be an old house was now looking new. Where once stood a shed, there now was a barn. Recalling the tracks that she had taken, she wondered if the horses had distracted her into taking the wrong ones. But she hadn’t. This was the house but it was from a different time. Anxiety filled her as she walked up to the door. She could hear people talking inside but didn’t recognise their voices. Thinking that she might be walking into a trap she decided against the idea of knocking and started to walk away.
