Things were different the next morning. The breakfasts that had been made for her by Mason over the past months had now come to an end. As she made her way to the kitchen to pour herself a bowl of cereal, she could feel the boys behind her at the bench.
‘What?’ she said to them without even turning around.
Gavin was the one to speak. ‘The game’s at an end.’
Being the last year of school for him, meant that he would need to start thinking about going to work next year. The thought of work horrified him as he had been set a bad example by his father. Desperately he wanted to have the money by the end of the year so he wouldn’t need to look for a job. Riding his motorbike everyday for the rest of his life was all he needed. The only problem standing in his way was Vanessa.
Gavin didn’t want her doing anything; he was trying to drive her insane. When she complained, her mother had not replied. Gavin’s plan of insanity might be working as Vanessa was about to have a dream that could send her over the edge.
The sound of the bikes came to an abrupt stop at the shed. An extra sound of laughter was to be heard coming to the back door. Vanessa, still in her school uniform with her hair tied back off her face to concentrate on cooking dinner, looked up to face the boy that had made her heart ache. Fear overcame her as she stared into his blue eyes.
As if Gavin knew her thoughts, he chuckled into her ear, ‘As if he’d be interested in you!’
She knew that he was right. It was better to get it over and done with. With one look, he wouldn’t be interested in seeing her again. It was probably for the best.
Jack spoke as they walked through the kitchen. ‘Why doesn’t your stepsister ride?’
William shrugged his shoulders. ‘Gavin doesn’t want her to.’
Jack wanted to know why. That’s when Gavin interrupted.
‘I hate her. I don’t want her near me.’
‘Why?’ tested Jack.
‘Because she’s the reason I don’t have money. I have to wait until she’s eighteen.’
Mason quickly changed the subject as the inheritance talk was taboo to other people.
Jack whispered to Gavin, ‘If she rides a motorbike and has an accident then you’ll get the money.’
Ears were poised into position as Gavin had not thought about an accident. Suddenly realising that he shouldn’t have said anything, Jack tried to change the subject. It was too late as Gavin was now speaking to his father.
Mason smiled like a vulture. ‘Of course, if it looks like an accident, then they’ll pay Lucinda.’
William and Richard were huddling up. ‘It has to be an accident though,’ Mason told his boys as he could see the excitement in their eyes.
Worry hit Jack as he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. All he wanted was to be able to go riding with Vanessa. He knew now that he had to stay friends with Gavin to find out what he was up to. Somehow he would have to see Vanessa in secret to warn her, he couldn’t let on that he was interested in her otherwise Gavin would not tell him anything. Quickly, he had to come up with a plan.
