The Island
1
Consider the sea's insatiate lust
And my power of resistance.
The waves' appetite
Gives me reason to exist
This undermining
This daily assault on my body
Keeps me singing
Like the larks that rise from my heather.
The sea would swallow me whole
But I am a shelter
For music that startles the sky.
In my fields and furrows
Is rhythm to rival the sea.
Is this why we fight?
Does my hidden music
Draw the sea to my throat
To suck my secrets into itself?
Must two kinds of music
Clash and devour
Till the crack of whatever doom lies in store?
I am always about to surrender
When the sea withdraws from my shore
And leaves me to hear my own music again.
Nothing stranger!
I am consoled
By the voices of creatures
Whose wings are made of my pain.

This morning my fields sigh with relief
Because they have survived a storm
When the sea explodes in rage or grief
What can they do but take it as it comes?
My fields are not interested
In suicide or martyrdom
But in green joyful endurance,
In those changes that are mine also.
If I could imagine a happy man
He would be like my fields before
And after storm.
He would live close to the battered shore
But flourish in his own way.
He would accept the sky's changes
Absorb its fury
Be an image of repose in its light.
But I know nothing of men
And must content myself with
Green peace thatknows how to survive.
Worse storms, I know, are gathering
But my fields will live.
