Missing Children 9/18/2005 7:40:39 PM
I see myself in the eyes of children, missing and lost by Hurricane Katrina
Our pastor talked about the missing children due to hurricane Katrina in church today. My heart cries for those children, who due to the catastrophe, got separated from their parents. The anguish of the mothers, not knowing what has happened to their little ones, and the confusion of the little ones who don’t have any idea what is going on can only be appreciated by one who has gone through something like that.
I can relate to the little ones because that was my story 60 years ago. I got separated from my parents at the age of three during the Second World War in Europe. We were ethnic Germans who had been living in Poland for many generations prior to Hitler. But when he was losing the war he had started, we had to flee for our lives. My baby brother died in my mother’s arms and I also became ill. My mother had to leave me at a hospital and continue to flee.
I know what it’s like to be young, sick and alone in a hospital in the midst of disaster, and have no one who cared about me. I saw a picture of a crying three- year old boy on the inter- net this afternoon. He had gotten separated from his mommy during the hurricane. That precious baby! I could see myself in that child’s eyes.
I have written a book about my childhood experience. The book is titled BY HANDS OF STRANGERS, A Story of God’s Providence. It was published this year in May by Pleasant Word, a division of Winepress Publishing. It chronicles my childhood journey through that trauma, my anger as a young adult as to why that had happened, and my coming to terms with those events. I am alive today because of what strangers did for me back then. I invite you to look at my website to read more about it. http://www.wordsfromagarden.blogspot.com
