I had long since thought that being ready for an unforseen emergency was a good idea. But now after Katrina hit I am getting serious.
Yesterday I packed some foodstuff into long term mylar food storage bags. I added two oxyggen absorbers per gallon bag. Then heat sealed them. It's neat to see how that works. This morning the bags look like they have been vaccum sealed, all shrunk in together. Without oxygen in the bags the beans and rice should keep a long time. This is just the beginning of my efforts.
If an emergency hits our city, it would be good to be able to eat anyway. And should we need to evacuate, I can just grab the food bins these bags will be stored in before we head out.
