New video on Hawaii history about to be released. Possible to make advance orders. There has been an exciting development in Hawaii. The eighty minutes of film that were recorded by Guy Gaumont of Pono Productions when I was down in June for the Maui Film Festival have now been turned into a Video and/or DVD. The Pono Productions video/DVD entitled "Conversations in Keokea, No. 1, Rosemary I. Patterson, Ph.D. and Laurel Douglass, Missionary Descendant" concerns The Chief's Children's School (Honolulu, 1840) and the suffering of its students including the students who would become Monarchs of Hawaii.
The suffering of the Royal students under the severe programming of Calvinist missionaries is discussed as well as Indigenous student suffering in Residential Schools in other areas of the world during the colonial era. Suggestions of the meaning of the suffering for both descendants of Indigenous people and descendants of the Euro-American colonizers is also discussed with connections to Viktor Frank's Meaning Based Therapy. A bridge for reconciliation between these two groups of people, who often view each other with distrust, is suggested.
The video/DVD would be of interest to both travellers to Hawaii who wish to know more about the culture and history, and High School, College, or University Psychology, Sociology, Native studies, Anthropology students who wish to know more about Ethnocentric Monoculturalism and Identity Achievement in multicultural populations.
