Cover picture on Mapping Reality. People really like the cover picture on Mapping Reality, and say that it looks like something from the Sistine Chapel.
Actually, the picture is not from the Renaissance or Italy at all. In fact, the painting Liefdesdroom (‘Dream of Love’) was painted by the Dutch painter, Willem Martens (1856-1927).
Willem Martens is no relation of mine though. My paternal ancestor Joachim Hendrik Ma(a)rtens landed in the Cape (South Africa) in 1747. He was a soldier from Brandenburg, Prussia. However, it is certainly not impossible that Willem Martens’ family also originated from Brandenburg – I don’t know.
