On 7-27-06, I submitted a Roundtable question about commercialization verses the work of true artist. Thanks for your comments. Some made me smile, others provoke thought, and there was one that I didn't quite comprehend. Here are my concluding thoughts on the subject... Thanks again!!
I've enjoyed the dialogue regarding the commercial side of writing . . . Thanks to those who have taken the time to email and share their thoughts. Please understand that I wasn't trying to infer that writers needs for commercialization would smothers the artist inside them. . . I was merely sharing my experience and my unwillingness to sellout to the process and protocols of commercialization, i.e., writing to please others, begging for attention through query letters, taking classes to find out 'what will sell' etc. My career has never been writing. Therefore, I write for sheer enjoyment and offer it up to anyone who 'cares' to read it. I have received some attention for my writing, such as an investor buying the rights to my novel, some of my freelance writing has been published, and I have a small following of readers. I don't have an oppositional disorder toward the protocols of commercialization. I just don't consider them at all when writing ... In most aspects of life, I am and will always be a candidate for change. However, when it comes to writing, that the artist inside will never yield or be contained.
