The history of the omega-3s

It's been a very long time since I wrote The Eskimo Diet, which introduced the world to the health aspects of the omega3s.
So let me explain how it all happened. I was a consultant physician with an interest in gastroenterology and nutrition at the teaching hospitals in Sheffield, one of the major centres of medical research in the UK. My colleague, Reg Saynor, a basic scientist, had been involved in omega-3 research for many years. He invited me to link up with him in explaining the importance of his research to the world.
I had two decades of experience in dealing with heart attacks, and was very interested in helping people to avoid them. Reg had his own experience in attempting to lower cholesterol, and also in lowering triglycerides, a fat that was particularly associated with risk of heart attack in women.
So we linked up. Reg was not a writer, though he had, in fact, a very nice writing style. I was already a writer - in other words, a communicator. He asked me to help him tell the world about what he had been doing for years. I combined this with what I had been doing in treating, and preventing, heart attacks.
Thus was The Eskimo Diet born.
Within three years the basic message of the book was taken up by governments in the UK, the US and Australia, and remains so today, despite every effort of various dismissive attempts to discredit it.
