A view from the outside in
On a cold day in March of 1995 I boarded a Northwest flight from Frankfurt to Detroit. Thirteen years later, I must say, that it was the smartest thing I ever did.
I came to the United States, not knowing if I'd stay or what this country might have in store for me. But it didn't take long to figure it out.
I didn't come from a war-torn country, nor did I run from a place where democracy was a forbidden word. My native Germany offers similar opportunies, but still - I am glad and honored to be allowed to live here instead.
Carefully, I watched the past presidential campaigns, without the privilege of being allowed to vote. But no matter if my little voice has the right to be counted, I do take my duties of living in a democracy very seriously. With open ears and open eyes I live day to day.
And so I do today.
Someone smart said this morning on the radio, that every time America elects a president, everybody wins. I couldn't agree more. This is demoracy. This is indeed, the greatest country in the world, and there's no place I'd rather be.
President elect Barack Obama - last night history was made and I'm here as a witness. Who knows, maybe this kind of change will shift Old Glory's gears down and give her a new momentum.
God bless the people who walk on this turf, the new leader whose promises shall be kept, and the ones who fight for America's freedom.
