A Christmas gift of crying with a stranger. 12/6/2007 7:34:40 PM
The Christmas after my husband and I divorced was a painful time for me. Everyone was running around the city stores and especially at the big shopping Mall. Families busily shopping as they celebrated the joy of being together. They giggled, they joked, they shared their lives. Everywhere I looked I was reminded that this Christmas season I would be alone. As I walked down the long corridors of the mall the pain became unbearable. Each step became heavier until I was no longer able to pick up my feet. At first the tears flowed gently down my face as I grieved my losses. Then the tears got bigger and more profuse. Finally the crying overpowered me and I could no longer stand. To keep from falling, I sat on the floor of the mall. I did not even notice all the people passing by me. they might have been staring at me but the tears were falling so profusely that I could not see anyone.
A strange elderly man stopped and said that I looked like someone who had just lost a loved one. Through my tears, I agreed. He sat down on the floor on the Mall with me and began to tell me his story of his beloved wife, whom he had lost a few months ago. He told me the story of their lives together, how they had met, the children they had and many of the special moments that they had shared over a life time. He began to cry with me. I shared my life and the broken marriage and how lonely I felt. He could relate and gave me the assurance that I was not alone. He was right I was not alone.
I will never forget that wonderful angel who came to me in the middle of my pain in the middle of my life. He blessed me with his presence and his willingness to stop in the middle of the mall to share his life with me. The greatest gift of all is the gift of oneself.I encourage all who read this little story to share the gift of your life with one another during this Christmas season.
