THOUGHTS ON WRITING
The more I learn about writng the less, I know. Now I have added insult to injury by adding a cliché, in fact two of them. It is unsettling attending all the writng lectures, chats and seminars. I have been(passive) told not to use passive verbs, or adverbs, overly(adverb) much. “Suddenly,” is a no-no, as are directional words like “Up” or “down.”
“Seen,” should be(passive) used with discretion, I learned, after just figuring a way to change my POV using that very(never use very) word. Lovely prose, such as, “The brilliant rays of a glowing summer sun filled the sky with the pastels of an ethereal painter, “ to, “The sunset was brilliant.”
Writng, I am learning, is to be(passive) all action words, light on description, short on flowery phrases, with no cliches, although we use cliches in natural conversations. Almost all “ing” and “ly” words are to be avoided, especially in the beginning of a sentence. “Smiling coyly, she let him in the door.“ Never! Sentences should be short and to the point. I wonder what would have become of Shakespeare, if he had heeded these pearls of writing wisdom. And some one should certainly tell Koontz of these rules. Perhaps he can use some of his millions made on best sellers to buy a how-to book on writng. As for me, after removing all my faux pas’s, I am going to have to write the sequel to “See Dick Run.”
