In reference to some recent blogs: 4/22/2004 7:20:14 PM
I once had a catalog of printers' fonts dated sometime in the late 1800's. In it were various quotations and excerpts from well-known books, set in different type faces. It was a good old catalog... leather-bound, believe it or not, but I lost it when it slipped out of the straps that held it... not tightly enough, apparently... to the buddy seat of my motorcyle (no saddle bags).
One of the quotations I memorized before losing the damn thing goes like this: "Sometimes, ego makes me think my work is better than it is. Oh, that a jury of my peers will view my work and say, "It is excellent." I like that little gem, and used to enjoy saying, 'I know from nothin' about perfection, and strive only for a degree of excellence'. Well, poo, poo and howdy do... wasn't that precious? I don't say that anymore. Now, I just do my work and write when the mood strikes, and say, "You go, scribe" to those who aspire to 'excellence' or (lawd hep us), 'perfection.
'Perfection' be damned... and I wouldn't know excellence if it hit me up side the head (unless, maybe it was something written by anne c., of whom I'm deeply enamored).
These days, to hear "It is good" seems an almost unattainable goal... but maybe someone will read this blog and say, "Got it". That would be enough.
