Diabetic Monitor

I am a Type 2 Diabetic. I have been for a number of years. It seems to run in the family. To help me keep track of my blood sugars I have a monitor. I check my blood twice or three times a day.

It is a very simple procedure. I insert a test strip into my monitor, prick my finger with a lancet, and apply the drop of blood to the test strip. The blood is drawn up into the machine and in 5 seconds the result is displayed on the screen of my monitor.

Yesterday, at noon, I went through the above procedure and, lo and behold, all I got was a blank screen--no error message and certainly no result. This has never happened to me before so I didn't know what to make of it. However, as I thought about it a little more, I realized that for several weeks a picture of a battery had been displaying on the screen.

That must be the problem, I thought, the battery has stopped working. I looked inside the monitor and discovered a round flat battery. Off I went to the pharmacy and thankfully they had the kind I needed.

I brought it home, changed it, and, wow, no more picture of a battery on the screen! Just to be sure, I tested my blood and all worked perfectly.

I was very relieved. I hate to be without my monitor. I like to keep track of my blood sugar levels regularly to make sure I'm keeping on top of things. A blood sugar level that is too high or too low can cause a problem medically --death being the worst result. I go into the lab to get it checked out about every three months. But this little machine keeps me alert to possible problems before they become irreversible.
