Here we are on the last holiday weekend of the summer.
As I look back over the summer, I wonder at how quickly the time passed by. Now we are looking at fall once more and, though, according to the weatherman we still have a lot of summer-like weather to come, in our hearts we know that we are looking towards winter coming upon us very soon.
The fall warblers have been gathering in our trees, making a food stop on their way further south. There are only a couple of hummingbirds coming to the feeder now and it seemed like such a short time ago that we were looking for their arrival.
Seasons come and go in a routine manner. We know that spring follows winter; summer follows spring; fall follows summer; and winter follows, oh so closely, on fall. We, here in Muskoka where I live, have had a very good summer as far as warmth is concerned. But we did have a long period when rain did not come when we needed it, and then we had a cool spell with rain right in the middle of our summer.
The seasons, though predictable in their steady round, are not always predictable in their weather producing way. We have been warned that there will be a shortage of food this winter because of long drought periods and consequently we can expect to pay more for the food we are accustomed to getting throughout our long cold season.
On Tuesday, many children will return to school and their traditional fall learning and sports. When I was a child, I always loved to go back to school. I loved to see the friends I had missed all summer, and I liked to be challenged by new learning. If a child learns good reading skills nothing is beyond them in their adult life for, once you can read, you can do anything you desire to do.
This has been a long rambling look at fall and what it means to us. I am looking forward to our September Fall Fair here in Bracebridge and a concert that I hope to go to in November. After summer has left us, we find that fall and winter can be a wonderful time of the year too.
