I cringe when I read 'their' for 'they're,' 'they're' for 'there.'
I’m a writer. It’s what I do, who I am. I write. Can’t help myself. No apologies, just putting it out there in case anyone wanders onto this blog and wonders as they’re wandering, ‘who is this guy?’ I do peddle books, too, and that’s the primary purpose of the blog site. But books are nothing more than collections of words, words that someone has fashioned in a certain order to form a story. I believe we’re all writers in a way. In our DNA as humans lies the residual need to form a narrative, to tell who we are, and what happened to us. At some long, unfathomable past we all sat by a fire each night and rambled about where we’d been, what we’d seen, what critters we almost caught, what critters almost caught us. So calling this an ancient tradition isn’t too much of a stretch, although my wife frowns on the open fire in my office, so I’ve traded that for the symbolic fire of a Mac. It’s not as warm, and doesn’t provide quite the feeling of safety, but it satisfies the fire code, so…
Speaking of codes, as a writer I take a lot of pride in my product, my words assembled on the page. I consider myself a keeper of that ancient code. I dislike typos and grammatical errors; I cringe when I see ‘their’ for ‘they’re’, ‘they’re’ for ‘there.’ Nearly cry when I see seven exclamation points!!!!!!! I feel my blood pressure rise when I read ‘irregardless,’ and ‘at that point in time,’ and ‘you know, like.’ Yes, I do rant about this. Just ask my wife, the same one who forbids me to build a fire in my office.
I’ve had (very) limited success writing for commercial purposes, but great success writing for the satisfaction of having done it. In other words, depending on how one defines success, any writer worth a nickel is successful when he/she devotes time to it and strengthens the old writing muscle by constant improvement. Here’s an example: yesterday, I was walking past Victoria’s Secret and noticed their new ad slogan. Here’s what it says, and I am not making this up: ‘You’ve never seen body’s like these.’ Body’s? And these are ‘successful’ copy writers. I was going to take a picture of the ad, but an old guy outside Vicky’s House of Slinky Secrets taking pictures would likely creep people out, get security involved, so I didn’t. Now, I suppose the ad was 100% successful; it did in fact grab my attention. Or perhaps it shows my age, since I noticed the typo instead of the teeny-topped youngsters selling their, ahem, wares in the window.
In any case, when I see such degradation of the language, I reject it. I’m a writer, and words are important to me. When I was a pilot fuel was important to me. I used to say that the only time you have too much fuel is when you’re on fire. Words are the fuel we use to tell our story around that fire. Writers are the keepers of the flame.
