Wa are all aging... let's get together and help make life a little easier as we grow in an age-friendly community. For some time now I have been somewhat involved with the Senior Center in Yarmouth, a town in the heart of Vacationland USA... beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The town Division of Senior Services provides elderly residents the opportunity to participate in a variety of wellness programs at the Senior Center and throughout the town.
Under the leadership of the Director of Senior Services, Kathi Bailey, the town was recently one of few to be accepted into the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Community program. For information on WHO I would refer you to my earlier article here on Authors Den entitled... "So who's WHO?"
The world is rapidly aging and by 2050 the global population of people aged 60 and over will double to 22%. There will then be more older people than children aged 14 years of age for the first time in history. At the same time our world is a growing city. Living longer is the fruit of critical gains in public health and standards of living. Older people tend to require supportive and enabling physical and social changes to help them through process of aging. Aging is a life long process that starts the day we are born to as long as we live.
The mission of the Age-Friendly Community is using a lifespan point of view, or "cradle-to-grave" approach for identifying and developing services and resources that focus on involvement in a community that is friendly to people of all ages.
If each and every one of us would take one moment from our busy lives to offer one skill or do one thing to contribute to our town to help make it an Age-Friendly one... it would a wonderful world to age.
