Living with COPD

Each day that I am alive
I continue to realize
that I am witness to my own demise
and am not pleased with what I visualize.

Each day that I age
I seem to falter with the turn of a page.
As we speak I am less able
to do what yesterday I was quite capable.

Each day has been a venture
in a long up and down trek through life.
Having done most of what I had hoped to do
there is little else I look forward to.

Each day has been filled with
doing many things, going many places,
meeting many wonderful loving people.
None of which I can take with me.

Each day my fear is the end
may very well soon be near
and time to lay me down to rest...
ad infinitum

My uncle had it--the result of excessive smoking--he died rather young compared to his brothers. So, even though your poem doesn't describe the symptoms, I can see why you sense the end coming… Probably from the inability to breathe properly.

On the bright side, if you can hold on for another 15 to 20 years, medicine may have a way to reverse or even cure the condition so that you can live your full lifespan to be able to share your wit and poetry with us.

I wish I had a magic wand! I'd make you all shiny and new! In fact, I'd wave it over myself as well.

Love ya!

Since I am afflicted with emphysema (COPD) I completely understand what you are saying here, more so than those who don't have it. Thank you for posting this, John.
