These works give tremendous insight into a woman’s soul and the things that shape it. In “Mama Says,” a young girl looks for the daddy who left her. “Ghetto Child,” tells the story of a child from the ‘hood whose senseless death is mourned by only his mother. In “I Know Nothing of Africa”, the author uses colorful language to describe her soul-stirring dream-journey to Africa and in “The Last Hanging Tree”, she vividly recounts the lynching of a man as if she was actually there. The title poem proclaims the magnificent power, remarkable resilience and undying spirit of the black woman, “the mother of all life.” It is a celebration of all womanhood.
“I’ve always wanted to write poetry reminiscent of James Weldon Johnson’s The Creation; it’s my favorite poem and tells a great story. In writing about my own life, I decided to collect the most revealing poems I’ve written and weave them into one compelling piece of work. I tried to pour out my soul on the paper.”- C. C. Highsmith-Hooks was born Cynthia Renee Highsmith in Hempstead, New York. Her work has been featured on Timbooktu and Nubian Mindz. She has also contributed to several anthologies, including the recently-released "Letters from the Soul." Currently, she is working on three novels as well as a volume of short stories and thought-provoking essays with the working title “Oceans of Tears.” She lives in Riverside County, California with her husband, mother and son, Maurice.
