“Race?” he asked.
“Human.” I answered.
Then he glared up at me with angry eyes from behind his desk.
“No ma’am, I mean ethnicity, Caucasian, African American....”
“Both,” I interrupted.
“She can’t be both, ma’am.”
“Our daughter is both Caucasian and African American, sir.”
“She’s African American then.”
“No sir, I can assure you that my husband and I have contributed equally to her.
She is both.”
As his angry glare became a frown of confusion
I realized I was fighting a hopeless cause
with a man too blind to recognize it
never mind join it
so I answered “other” and left it at that.
As I was heading for the door
he looked up with what seemed to have become a concerned smile.
“You’re right,” he said, “she isn’t one or the other.
She is both.

but what would we call it?” he asked.
