Old skin

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Last night I dreamt that I was walking through a swap meet and trying on clothes here and there. None of the clothes I tried on would fit because I had grown to big for them. Though I usually love to shop second hand I think that in this particular dream it was a reminder not to try to walk around in old skin and deal with pressing situations with old outmoded behavioral patterns.

What a strange situation
it's brand new
yet it feels so old
Like I've been here before
and fear stops me cold
Could it be?
And if it is
what will happen to me?
Can I pick myself up and move on
when all my hope has gone?

No!
I can't wear it
I need to shrink back
in to something more comfortable
I need to run
I need to hide
I can't live with this fear by my side
I want my old skin back
It may not be safe
but at least I know what to ecxpect

But it wont quite fit will it?
Not as perfect as the new one
And my fear is related
to what is allready said and done
My old skin is a painful
comfort zone
That I sometimes slip into
to do myself wrong

I see it so clearly now
for what it is
There's no turning back
I've found peace in this
And I'm strong enough to share
I don't need to stand alone
To find the courage to care

I'm sorry I wore something old
for you
From this day on
I will always wear new

Elisabeth, life is a constantly changing arena of circumstances, expectations, responses and adjustments -- think of the impossible number of opportunities to change our molds, to readjust into what we are most comfortable, or uncomfortable in, as we like -- fascinating -- peace and love to you my friend -- JM

Hi Elisabeth, your dream is definitely thought-provoking. Sometimes, we consider our old skin to be a kind of comfort zone that we keep coming back, not knowing that it delays us from reaching a certain destination that might offer a 'new skin' which makes us feel comfortable. Have no fear in venturing into the unknown as long as you keep your faith in your heart and stick to the truth no matter what skin you're in. I enjoyed reading it. Keep them coming... :) Happy Valentine's Day to you,
Sheri

You know, theres a difference between a made-writer and a natural writer. Here I see a natural writer; Natural writers POUR! Whether its in our conscience or subconscience, a "natural born" always uses there pen to release so they can stand beside their life with more clarity* Its a beautiful thing when I see others such as myself, that use there pen as their own therapist;) It's smart, It's brilliant and a wonderful gift! Dreams can be quite the "guide." For those who pay attention are wise.

Great write. Thank you for sharing.
