Crossing The Abyss

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

I was born many years ago
into a life of trial and tribulation
Little did I know then
what was to come
I saw much terror
grew accustomed to horror
It became mundane
it never occured to me
it wasn't sane
For people to act that way
and never did it seem to sway
My mind away from laughter
I thrived when I should have shrivelled

Many years passed
I flew the nest
trying my best
to make a life of my own

I came across a beast
of raw strength
He had a feast
on my bruised and battered limbs
But never did he bruise my mind
to that he was always gentle and kind
And when I left this to
I fled the knife
that tried to split my heart in two

Some years passed
now I dealt with growing pain inside
The knowledge that I'd been a victim
all this time
brought shame to my side
I had to learn to cope
aided by many
I went out trying to rediscover hope

It brought me straight in to the arms
of a different kind of beast
On my mind he had a feast
I was blinded by his charms
Never thought to put the blame
on anyone else but me
After all this was all the same
my inprint collecting it's fee
And though I lived in horror and fear
I couldn't see it clear
I was a puppet on a string
locked in to slavery by a ring

But as the years went by
it came to dawn on me
It wasn't normal to cry
and not to see
What was illusion or dream
And I noticed to my surprise
I had many supporters on my team
that had witnessed my silent cries
And so I fled this nightmare as well
and started clawing my way out of hell

It took hard work and an open mind
spewing out horrors set on rewind
It left my bleeding soul raw
and ready for the ice to thaw
It was a meltdown of massive proportion
straightening out all distortion
And now I am strong
I can see clearly where it all went wrong
I don't regret anything
not even my time on a string
Because here I stand strong and tall
ready to recieve lifes blessings
and share with you all

Elisabeth, This is very meaningful, very powerful. Your review of one of my poems brought me to your site. I believe, eventually we all reveal ourselves in our writing. It has taken me a dozen or more, but I believe I’m beginning to get a read on you. I believe you are very talented and there is a lot “beyond” your words. Although rhyming and rhythm are my preference, count me as a new fan. I shall delve deeper into your works. I hope your writing continues to heal you as mine has helped to heal me. Thanks for sharing your hurt and your revival. Stay strong.

Elisabeth, it would be easy to want to blame and point fingers in your situation -- only a person strong of purpose and will could walk away and seek the good that is in life -- bravo to you my friend -- peace and love be always with you -- JM

Dear Elisabeth, I read this poem and congratulate you for writing such well expressed account of your hardship. What I really value the most is that you came out stronger. Now we can all give you our blessings. My fatherly advice to everybody: to stick with the positive and happy aspects of life. You will see that life will share with you only happiness. Love Emile

Amen to Crossing the Abyss, we all have gone through our own terrors or met our own demons...Everyone has a story to tell, all unique and just as important. You tell yours very well!

Much peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"
