Brutal Awakening.

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Yet another poem inspired by times passed. As it turned out I wasn't doomed, but at the time it sure felt like it. But do we ever really know for sure?

Brutal Awakening
Oh, how I tried to hinder your arrival.
I have lived a dream for far to long.
Closing my eyes to reality,
I pushed  it away with determination.

Now I stand here in schock,
my hands are trembling,
I feel ill,
but most of all,
I want to cry.
But tears deny me
their purification.

I'm smothered in anguish,
torn apart by shame.

I should have seen this coming
and now I stand here a fool, a knave,
a hopeless dreamer, robbed of all illusions.

Brutal Awakening,
can I really go on after this?
Can I sink back in to
blessed denial or am I doomed?
Doomed to walk the earth a hollow
shadow, with my heart on my sleeve.
