Broken Man Remedy

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

This is something I've seen happen far to often, an abuser clings on to his victim and will not let go. I often wonder why. This is one view of the dilemma, written out of the victims perspective. Co-dependency and enabling is also something I've reflected on in the process of writing this.

Please tell me
what is it you see in me
that hightens your obsession
to this degree

Is my voice a soothing balm
my thoughts a path to calm

Is my protection
your connection
to your soul

Do you stand and fall with me
am I your Broken Man Remedy
Tell me what you see
so I may use it to break free

Do you think I can fix
your fickle mind
Or do you think I can put up with it
most of the time

Tell me, can you be honest with me
enough to help me break free

Tell me, why do you say one thing
and do another
Or do one but not the other

Do you think I can help
set you free
Tell me,
am I your Broken Man Remedy

Make up your mind
one way or the other
Tell me what it will be
so that I may take it to heart
and break free,
one way or the other..

Sometimes a person can become so used to pain that it's absence can frighten them, scare them, trouble them.

I love this piece. Brilliant use of metaphor with "Broken Man Remedy".

The role of abuser to victim and victim to abuser for that matter seems to blur the longer the abuse continues. I do not condone abuse but I can also see how a love/hate relatioship can and does develop in so many cases...sort of like the Stockholm syndrome in prisoners. You captured this all so well.

Elisabeth,

Very nice - what an interesting interpretation of the role of the abuser to the victim. Here the victim sounds like a consolable sort who is standing at the wayside even to their own reality.

Thank you, ~D.
