Rhyme Trap

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Monday, June 7, 2010

I used to write sense,
I used to write feeling.
I used to pour my heart
and soul into the lines.

I followed my instinct
went with the flow.
Words were like magic
impossible to contain
each sentence wild and free
yet unavoidably attached to me.

In the days, weeks and months,
even years that passed
it's form changed.
From wild and untrimmed
to neat and structured.
From emotional and giving
to restrained and contained.

Now I write attentionseeking
wordweeping
orderly verses.
In my rhymefactory
in trajectory
to planet authours ought to.

What a shame,
it's not the same
as it ever was
or ever will be
anymore.

Bleeding eye sore,
it matters to whom?
It matters to me,
because these are you see,
these are my children
by creation.

Elisabeth, while the renderings we produce surely evolve naturally over time, being true to ourselves, maintaining our individual style is vital -- without it, we would derive no satisfaction and would have no need to share -- be exactly who you are and let your work evolve naturally, share your unique gift with the world -- "keep it from the heart and down to earth, write the poetry that makes a difference, give us all our money's worth" (a rough interpretation from J. Cash's "Songs That Make A Difference") -- may peace and love be always with you my friend -- Jon Michael

Hello Elisabeth! Yes, our poetry are our children, and as such they can be: surprising, irritating, soulful, long winded, short and terse, happy, sad...and on and on. Methinks you are too critical of yourself...I like this!

I appreciate this perspective that you have shared Elisabeth. The way that I share poetry, sometimes people think I'm not the same person. My limericks are completely different from my "soul" stuff. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Regis
