Lost II

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

I held you as you shivered in anguish
a mind so full of doubt and fear,
I tried to heal you by holding you near.

I assured you I love you over and over
and above,
I kissed you, I hugged you,I fondled you,
while whispering words of love.

When you were in doubt
I became your most fierce defender
not only for you
but for everything you are about.

I sheltered you from harm
I sheltered you from you.
I took you on my wings
and tried to carry you through.

(But somewhere along the way,
maybe when you were in my arms
at your moment of most heavy doubt
and you asked me to hit you
because you deserved it.
And I said NO, NEVER)

Maybe it was then I realised
that I can't help you,
it goes deeper than that.
Maybe that was when I saw you for
what you was.

At least I know one thing for sure,
that's when I started looking back,
scrutinizing each step of the way.
The foundation upon wich I was standing
started to sway and crumble,
and down the fascade came
with a terrible rumble.

I have no ground left to stand on
no fight still in me,
I can't defend anymore
I am lost you see.

(Still I put the blame on me)
