If

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Thursday, March 24, 2011

If I had the power
to gain anything I wish for
my only wish would be
to open your eyes and make you see.
If I had the words that could
open any tightly closed door
the only door I would pry through
would be the one that keep understanding from you.
If my eyes were tools of persuasion
and they could open yours by mere glance
I would stare in your eyes day and night
until one day you’ll see truths might.
If my tears were the serum of truth
to make all things lucid and clear
I would cry you a river
and slice for you from fact a sliver.
If my heart could share the truths I’ve learned
to steer you clear of the dangers ahead
I would open it up and give it away
for you in safety to always stay.
If my hands were mighty protective walls
to lock you in a fortress of safety
I would make them a rocking chair so calm
for you to always relax in its balm.

Elisabeth, you have written the consummate "if" poem. Longing and love are held delicately in this expression. I bid you love joy and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

Beautiful sentiments but so many "ïfs", this world, and love in particular seems to need that word in so many ways.

Elegant sermon, Elisabeth, sermon
in the very best way without heaviness or clutter
or labouring.
Your words and lines are very beautiful,
as beautiful as your thoughts.
