Self Monitoring

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

When your high in self monitoring you are something of a social chameleon, you change your views to fit the crowd. It can make you very popular socially but it can also make you seem dishonest and not trustworthy. On the other hand, if your low in self monitoring you can't go against what you believe, wich will make you come off as rather impolite. This is not an either/or case though. I think most of us pick our battles, to only raise a fuzz in the important issues.

High Self Monitoring

Whatever you say I say to
'cause I don't want to upset you
I walk down the trail that follow your lead
as long as you're in sight I sow your seed

But when you turn your back I'm no longer true
somebody else will fill the place of you
I turn myself in any direction where majority rules
depending on company I'm either happy or sing the blues

I have many different skins to fit for him and her and you
and you all love me because my mask can stick like glue
Sometimes though I give you that funny feeling
to jolt your memory and send your mind reeling

But pretty soon you will forget
'cause I have many tricks to show you yet
I'm like a circus monkey always putting on a show
and you'll always love me that's my vow

Elisabeth, I view the issue more as a value programming scenario. Professor Morris Massey's old, "who you are is where you were when" theory. Most of us are attuned to listening for credos that tend to support our own value programming and manrtas so that we are not constantly experiencing cognitive dissonance. Your "self monitoring" at first blush would seem to be more of a high or low self esteem issue to me? An interesting read my dear friend. I bid you joy love and peace. Jon Michael
