Wired for destruction

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

I was told my life was wired for destruction.

I was told my journey would fail.

I could be nothing

no one at all.

My glow was made to fade.

Pushed away and

trampled on.

Left in shallow mounds on the ground

for each and everyone

to step on.

And so I believed.

I believed I could be nothing.

I believed I could never follow

my dreams.

I believed that my hearts desire

was not meant to be.

I lived a life like the one that

was predicted for me.

I believed I had no talent.

My journey went from one evil to another

on and on.

Believing I was to please

not to be pleased.

My life will flickered.

I was pushed to the limit

and only then did I decide

enough is enough.

No more!

Never again!

I turned to the pen to soothe myself

and eventually to learn.

To learn to avoid.

To learn to help those in need

to help me heal

to heal.

My glow returned.

Rose from mound

to boulder

to mountain.

And I will not allow it

to fade again.

Your poem reminded me of an experience I had when first out of high school. I was working as a typist (could type 100 words per minute - and still can!) in a cold storage warehouse in an office with two women who ganged up on me because they felt I was an intruder. I told them that I wanted to go to college and they just laughed, saying I was too dumb and made too many mistakes to do that. The rest is history. I liked your positive attitude at the end of the poem.

Oh, dear! When people are mad they would often say the things that they don't mean. Best is to believe in YOURSELF, and move forward, rise above them.
