Feverish Dreams

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

I've been having recurrent fevers since this summer, with a few weeks apart. Feverish dreams are quite something else. Here's my take on it.

Warm and cold at the same time,
sweat dripping on my brow.
Faint voices echo in the distant,
whispers that won't quite let them be heard.
i am wrapped in blood red silk,
my boody is pasted like concrete
with this suffocating fabric.

Mist and light, flicker, just
barely out of sight.
Shadows in the darkened
shade of red, teasing images,
in my head.

Somewhere I know it is a dream,
yet, I can't let go to wake up.
Turning, feverish, circling round,
I must see what hides in the shadows.
I must hear what is whispered in the distant.

A bell tolls, it's coupled by beautiful chime.
Now is it telling me it's time?
Time to pay the piper?
Time to be ushered in?
Time to be held to account,
for each and every sin.

Over mountains steep
and through valleys deep
I fly. Twisting, turning,
not quite perceiving.
Laughter to the right of me,
echo, echo in the mist.
Whispers to the left of me,
haunting, haunting.

Now falling so fast my stomach turns.
It seems forever this endless,
helter skelter down the blood red skies
of brittle, feverish dreams.
Soft, muddled my screams.

Plunging into a pool
of cool water it seems.
No! Seize this dream,
I am in an endless stream, of blood.
Iron tastes on my tounge,
Wicked dream, as I scream,
waking up far from serene.

So very descriptive. I felt like I was there with you. I wonder what's making the fevers. As I recall, that's what triggers dreams like this, actual fever. As I read I couldn't help picturing purgatory. Not quite hell but very close to it.

For your sake, I hope your immune system overcomes what is causing these fevers and you can get back to normal dreams soon. The kind that inspire me to write many poems.

Some of our most vivid dreams although seemingly frightening as they occur are often the inspiration for some of our best work. Great capture Elizabeth.
