Blindfolded

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Inspired by not one, but many songs with the same theme of unrequited love coupled with unconditional love that isn't reciprocated and what it does to a persons soul. I wanted this piece to start out beautiful and then go darker as it went and I think I achieved that. I struggled quite a bit with the darker parts I must say, because I am in such a happy place myself. In my early days of writing my poetry was quite dark, because I was in a dark place back then and I drew inspiration from that in this piece. As my writing journey progressed it synced with my healing journey and my poetry became more self help and inspirational. I couldn't help but write a few lines about self help as well, as you can see in the last few lines. The only solution to heal is to leave.

Poem Artwork

 On the horizon shadows tower
over blue waters and green fields
wich becomes the hideaway for the
weary sun to go in hiding after
a long day of shining for you.

The cool water that drizzles down
on you from the heavens above
are the tears universe cries,
for the lost souls in this world.

You may be a weary wanderer
besieged by the roads you've travelled.
Trampled down to little and nothing
as you turn to face the crossroads
with bleeding heart held in hand.

Hope shines her misconstrue d beacon
across your jaded soul,
exposing blisters,
scars from yonder horizons,
battle axes barely buried
'neath dusty shoes.

How you yearn for the day when love
will light the way on the dark
and barren field where lay
the hearth you deem home,
though no one there knows your soul.

Tired and weary from poison arrows
flying back and forth, deadly wounded
soldiers standing on the battle field,
generals on opposite sides
of this war that wreck your world.
There will be no mercy, no surrender,
no visible battlescars to show.

On the altar of unconditional love
you sacrifice yourself piece by piece.
Take a finger here, an ear there, a mouth,
cut off the feet so you
cannot run no more.

You're left an open wound, a pustular sore,
bleeding out until
you cannot breathe no more.

How you toy with the gift you're given,
this life that are for the living to cherish.
Yet you strife, bend, twist and turn,
make yourself a living dead
as you take on the guilt.

Guilded knight of misintention
release your lady,
or the
joy of this world will hide
away as you stumble
blindfolded through life,
never again will you see the light.

As I read, your poem became more dismal as it progressed.

If I can venture an interpretation, I seem to find all of the disenchanted. All of the ones grasping for straws and finding allies on the Internet to bolster their courage for one last stand based on all their misery that they have brought upon themselves.

Against those of us who have overcome all of our fears, misfortunes and risen to a place of less reliance on others, where we are happy and can make critical decisions without hurting others in the process.
