Love as War

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

My continuation to explore if I can write darker poetry while in this happy place. I set out with only this photo that I took in Alicante 2017 as inspiration.

Poem Artwork

Some walk through life an impenetrable fortress.

I love no more
yet you still
refuse to
let go.

The skeleton hands
of love lost holds a cold
grip around my aching heart.

You are a dark impenetrable shell,
jagged, sharp edges surround your mind.

I remain stealthy
as I tiptoe mine fields,
the ambush is set with
such skill.

I am skilfully herded
straight into trip wire,
Confused I stumble as
you move in for the kill.

The thrill of the hunt as your
eyes glitter in triumph.

I fall endlessly with
silent scream
reverberating
my soul.

These chains of guilt,
forged in the depths,
hold me
down.
