One-sided Unconditional Love

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

I keep coming back to this topic, because I wish that everyone could understand that this is not what love should be like.

In many ways a
mindless wanderer in this
world of mindless wonderers.

Drew but a drop of blod
from the forsaken to
be the blessed self.

Walked the shadows
of the unholy valley of death
 heart a shadow itself.

Never did fade from life
but faded from mind and
from heart, a dreary grin drew
obscureness from the veins.

Darker shades of terror an
eerie company within
the souls firmament,
painted in thin coat
across a soul so jaded,
it's illusion of life made
a forceful theatre of
shadowplay.

Chaos reigned a battered
body, trembling in the rain,
the storm that wouldn't seize
it's deathgrip on the
mortal soul.

Obtuese recluse
forever refuse,
deny temptation
of the flesh
to offer itself
in feast to a beast.

Give way to a fearful,
undermined, huddled
soul of never-life
in nether-life astray.

Searching love in
broken hearts, the
broken toy-people
lie hiding in their
trenches.

A war of sorts
light it contorts
in aching souls
of netherworld,
of longing love.

Hunger tenderness
slave to pain,
compassion snarled
bones gnarled
bent in undefined
submission,
nothing remained
of the self
outstretched
on market shelf.

Your stanzas rightfully made me cringe at their negativity. If it is about one-sided love, your display of the result is very disturbing. Everywhere psychiatrists and psychologists state that we must "love ourselves" before we can love others. As I read I saw love in all the wrong places. Or at least a result of rejection from trying to love the unattainable.

Certainly shook me up! ;-)

PS. There are number of little typos or perhaps, a wrong word. But also, I saw words that seem to be wrong, but were chosen by you on purpose.
