Foolish Dream

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Thursday, December 22, 2022

A foolish dream
A fantasy gleam
Outshining me
because
It can never be

Utter prayers in mind
Please send me a sign
In my dreams each night
But still in light no sight

Who can mend this broken mind
that can't put out of reach behind?

I'd take on any mountain
to bathe in that fountain
poured out of holy grail
to finally cross my trail

I'd give anything I would
and keep on forever if I could
To make this fantasy real
To give that life a feel

This one was a real brainteaser. I kept trying to figure out whether the dream was desired or not. Whether it was so good to be impossible, or so bad that you couldn't get rid of it--at least in the poem.

I guess that would good poetry is, something that can be interpreted different ways.
