A bleak day in Danville

I was travelling home on New Year's Day 2008 when I had to pass through Danville, IL. It was a miserable day, very cold and windy and the scene in the main business district seemed to match it. That seems to be the case for all too many mid-sized midwestern industrial towns like Danville. "Uncle Joe" is Joseph Cannon, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while the long lost major factory was a General Motors facility on the west edge of town.

The wind whips mercilessly

across the frozen prarie,

as biting cold winds

and bitter temperatures

ring in the new year.

The winter blusters

on this cloudy day

as the snow whirls around

and lashes the town.

Past the bustling Wal-Mart

where everyone goes

after the city died,

the one-time city languishes.

The music shop,

the donut shop,

the grand old theater

are now shuttered

and falling down.

A once-bustling service startion

now creaks behind corkboard

without any pumps,

no service bays.

And out on the highway

the factory where everyone worked

is now just an open field.

Uncle Joe,

Uncle Joe,

Where did your town go?
