The haunted sandlot (Baseball belongs, part III)

I recently read about how the site of Tiger Stadium (the old home of the Detroit Tigers baseball team) had become a large, forgotten lot which was now just a small baseball field. This is salute to that field and the history of the Tigers' franchise. I thought about writing this in 2003 when the Bengals were horro-awful (119 losses), but they have restored some of their lost glory since then.

The crude diamond

at Michigan and Trumbull

is haunted you know.

On any summer's day,

a southern spectre

with flashing spikes

turns grass into dirt

and slashes at ghostly infielders.

Who led the American League

in doubles in 1936?

The Mechanical Man.

He roams there as well,

while Cochrane drops signals

to Bridges and Newhouser,

Fire Trucks and Trout.

He sets the table, then

Greenberg and  York

swing for the fences

followed by Maxwell and Rocky

driving in Kell and Keunn.

They all back up

Foytack,Hoeft

and Cunning Jim Bunning.

McClain and Lolich

check Freehan's signs

while Kaline, Cash Horton,

Northrup clearing the bases,

rallying the Bengals and

healing Motown's burns.

Morrris from Parrish,

a grounder to short,

Sweet Lou to Trammell

a two for one for the Tiguhs.

If the other guys don't stand

like a house by the road and

watch the ball go by.

And way up above,

Ty and Ernie call the game.

Will anyone remember?
