This is one in a series of poems I have written about the lost loves of my junior high-early high school days. My last serious relationship occured my freshman year of high school and that lack of romantic interest was one reason for a lingering bitterness towards the entire high school experience.
This work was part of the January Open Mic at the Aha! Poetry web site.
The autumn blues
Why now in the fall,
do I still feel sad
over long ago and far away?
She had wide blue eyes
and a pretty smile,
short brown hair,
a tomboy perhaps.
She wasn't much to look at,
but just enough for me.
She was to me a beauty
seen in her blinking eyes.
I envied the rabbits
she stroked,
for years I adored
her from afar.
A literal doll's face,
a Girl Scout who put
strange thoughts in my head.
Her grin,
her sly little grin,
was something
I relish still.
She was a long-haired blonde,
a slight and perky thing,
who was always there.
She said she liked me
and walked to class with me,
for just a little while.
I should feel fortunate
without them.
I do, but I feel lonely
for them and I felt older
while young.
High school was colder
without them and now,
as I drink from
the bittersweet cup
of memory, I feel colder too.
Very hearfelt poem. 1st loves all grown up. we never seem to forget special girls loved hearing about them.
Schools aren't school without some. I understand that one perfectly.
Thanks so much (c:)

Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
