T'was the dream of a lifetime.
It shimmered 'neath the darkening sky,
its consumation danced, weaving flames
amid crackling laughter.
Once his hopes had risen faster
than the swiftly ascending sparks that
cavorted with the stars --
now they lay in ashes,
ripped from his aching heart
by talons of bigotry.
He turned to walk away, his
slumping shoulders heaving
with one final sigh, as
the last standing timbers
collapsed in upon themselves
in a final shower of sparks.
