Hold Back Your Anger

"Hold back your anger", I tell myself
But, I'm not listening! I'm in a rage! I'm totally deaf!
"Use caution, discretion, think this thing through
Be calm, re-assess, whatever you do."

I tell myself these logical deductions
I pride myself on intelligent discussions
"Violence is lunacy," to myself I say
"Breathe deep, relax, find another way!"

My rage is such that I swear and I quake
Chest heaving, spit flying, my honor's at stake
I cry for revenge, I'm defiant and bold
I admit that I'm now totally out of control

"I'll suit up in my armor, I'll call up warrior saints
Together we'll charge the enemy, not listen to complaints
I'll tear him to pieces, put an end to his lies
I'll do to him all the things that I truly despise!"

Rage is insanity, terrible to behold
I should calm down, breathe deep and rethink my goal
Rage is a curse, an ugly blight on my soul
Hold back anger, and reason will unfold

I'm beginning to think how futile this battle might be
I may win this fight, but will it be a true victory?
Who knows the effects of heated battles of ire
Who knows if one will also be consumed in its fire

"Hold back your anger," I say over and over again
"Controlling your emotion, is the place to begin
Re-evaluate the situation! Does it matter who is right?
Perhaps, my bruised ego, not honor, demands this fight!"

Anger can be the cruel inner self energy that we all must master my friend. You stated it well on the page. Hope it remains there and not in your heart.

Let the anger rage on the page just as you have done here. We can "feel" your intensity, "see" you flushed, "hear" your shouts. Great work, Gwen!

That emotion is not the most becoming for us that the Creator has instilled...but it is one that needs tempering on a continuous basis and that is the goal. Excellent write.

Controling anger and then understanding where it came from and then calmly reflecting and making decisions is great thing.......but a very hard lesson! Great write!

That's the way I feel every time I read the news. Yes, descretion is the better part
of valor, but it's not my strong suit. Interesting read.

Greetings Gwen,
Would that we could hold it in. When i was a Senior officer in the Corrective Services, i saw so many who could not, they paid the price for their natural lives.
This poem is so very descriptive and well presented. Well done

Wow Gwen! Great write!Powerful and excellent descriptions. We've all felt this. Never let anger win. there is a righteous anger, but it won't control you the way other anger does.
