An offering from my mental kitchen.

Poem Artwork

Thinking back I wonder

Was it the crust?

We had the ingredients of a lifetime

Sweet petunia petals

Earthy spice drops

Aromatic roots

Pink and purple magic

Combined with care

Bound by love’s pure nectar

Bubbling perfectly in life’s joyful oven

Somehow I forgot the recipe

I reset the timer

Adjusted the temperature

Ignored the smolder

Then managed to lose it all

The pliable crust that I had placed

To protect the nectar

Had become hardened

Dark and brittle

Porous

Petals wilted into sticky darkness

Nectar turned to coal

Thinking back I realize

It wasn’t the crust

We had the ingredients of a lifetime

The first line of the middle stanza says it all: "Somehow I forgot the recipe." Unfortunately, a too coomon problem. The results are never pretty.

It was not the crust it was the old crustacean in charge of the kitchen that ruined the recipe? Catchy title and bubbly phrasing makes this a pleasing and delicious potpourri Patrick. This one came out of the oven piping hot.

Shades of MacArthur Park - he left that cake out in the rain, and it took so long to bake it, and he'll never have that recipe again. Oh, No...

Such depth in receioe of your pie, but
the sweet taste is in the sharing....

you really do some heavy lifting here... rearranging the heavy mental furniture in my mind to account for this delicate balance, this deft combination of fragile elements so carefully wrought... form and finesse unite here, Patrick... a subtle touch indeed...

Somehow, in my stupidity of poetry, somehow I believe your "Sweet Petunia Pie" to be an ingredient for life rather than for an uneatable, indigestible substance.

We have the ingredients. A heart blessed with God's spirit.
Petunia's are a reminder of the beauty and colour given.

Even sweet petunias, when baked in a pie, must be eaten quickly, or they'll grow old, turn to mold, and if you eat them, you will die.

That's why we bury our dead and don't eat them. ;-)
