Back in the days
when I was young
oh fifty
sixty years
that have gone,
days seemed longer
time was on my side
I was allowed to grow up
as a child.
Never complained
about food on the table
or the cold winters
with ice on the inside
of the windows,
used a piece of cardboard
to block a hole in my shoes
kept the rain out
today keeps you amused,
delivered newspapers
to save for a bike
suddenly my life
came alive.
I was allowed be that child
grow in my youth
let my imagination
run wild,
now I feel sorry
for what childhood has lost
no one will ever know
the real emotional cost.
Minds filled with terror
from rolling news
must have the latest
mobile phones,
perverts that stalk
our streets
where kids
used to play,
children turned into 'adults'
without knowing love
wake up wake up
cant you see whats going on?.
This is no rant
about back in my days
its my anger at what
from our children
has been stolen
taken away,
the cyclops of evil
that disguises its name
hides behind
religious
and political disdain,
sadly it has
arrived at when it may be
what Jesus said
'no flesh would be saved.'
Sadly childhood
has been dismissed by men
fill yourselves knowledge
become rich
they exclaim,
live fast
live furious
for tomorrow
you may die
how sad that is how some think
not a eye blink,
they have lost
the greatest gift
their childhood
they have dismissed.
All of those bad things that you talk about are the result of modern technology peeling back ignorance and showing us that things are actually better than they were back in those good old days when abuse in the family went unreported, people got away with murder by skipping out, priests had a blank check to abuse. There were terrorists in the form of whole countries after us and our territory. There was hidden poverty and second-class citizenry for new immigrants and those with color.
From your perspective as a child, you just didn't know.
Here's a far more positive poem of a similar time.

to mess up someone's life--nor is adulthood, nor old age.
Some don't know their privileged position in life unless they
can see suffering in others. Well told, John.
