Pierre Boulez had a fascination with the sounds within a musical score, he said that the gap between the notations should create emotions, feelings, should be explored. Perhaps that is why he admired Frank Zappa, a free thinker in music who also explored what notations could or could not create.

Poem Artwork

If a musical score

is to come alive

to break through notations

to something that thrives,

it needs emotion

expectation

like a howling wind

that never gives in.

Of course there a gaps

between each note

yet if it were words

would it be read as flat

maybe boring,

no it would be read

to convey

what the writer

was saying.

Boulez wanted

music to come alive

that something in the background

would to those notes

breath life,

sometimes a voice

a dischordant bell

it was more than music

there was something to tell.

If you listen to that silence

between the notations

you can tap into

your deeper emotions.

I agree with the premise that music must reach some inner emotion in order to be great and understood by everyone. There are many songs that, after a very few notes, clearly indicate that an emotional rush will come from just listening to the magic.
