Lesson taught, but not learned.
The Back of the Bus was Full Leaving downtown Little Rock after a day of shopping, paying bills, boarded bus to Fair Park, Mama, Cheryl, and me. 1961, bus was full and hot. An elderly woman, worn and weary, hair frosty with a small, black hat perched atop her head, stood and held onto the pole, drained of energy, devoid of hope she held onto the pole. I was ten—I offered her my seat, she looked away, Mama scolded, they knew the rules, I did not.

Seems like forever ago-half a century. You can enact laws but to change men's hearts takes a generation(or more). Ignorance doesn't seem to have a shelf-life. The message is particulary potent through the eyes of a child. We arn't born with prejudice. It is learned. Fine poem, Carol...
